In Chennai, Idli is not just a breakfast food but also a comfort food, a dish for brunch, and an anytime snack. The love for Idlis in Chennai is limitless, and there are various types of Idlis with different textures, flavours, and forms.rom the Madurai-style to the grainy Udupi Idli and coin-sized Idlis that are served with sambar, this food trail across Chennai will give you the best taste of Idli in the city.

*Some restaurants listed in this trail serve non-vegetarian food, but have been added because they have good vegetarian options on their menu as well.

  • Kozhi Idli

The restaurant is in an old house that has been turned into a restaurant and given some simple tables and chairs. Our group ordered a variety of dishes, including Chicken Pepper Rasam, Chicken Thokku, Chicken Vadai, Naatu Kozhi Pepper Gravy, Idli, and Idiyappam. The vadai was similar to a Paruppu Vadai. The soup was tasty and had a strong pepper flavour. The idli and idiyappam were soft and delicious. The restaurant offers separate sections for families and Saturday nights. Overall, it was a satisfying experience.
  • Murugan Idli Shop

During our trip to Chennai, we ate breakfast at a simple restaurant where we had delicious soft idlis with a variety of chutneys served on a plantain leaf for an authentic experience. The Ghee Podi Idli was especially delicious, and the Vada was fresh and crispy, but the Idlis were the highlight. We also tried the Onion Uthappam, Sweet Pongal, Filter Coffee, Paniyaram, and chutneys.
  • House Of Idlies, Ashok Nagar

We recently placed an order for Idlis, a full Kattu meal, and a mini-lunch box for the weekend directly through the restaurant. The person who took my order was very polite and patient, making the delivery experience hassle-free. The full Kattu meal came with 21 items, all of which were delicious and well packaged. The mini lunch box included four types of rice and potato fries; overall, the food was excellent.
  • Eating Circles

The food at this place was outstanding, and we particularly enjoyed the Rava Idli and plain Idlis, which were very soft and delicious. The Butter Dosa and Uthappam were also very tasty. The filter coffee was especially good. Overall, it was a fantastic dining experience, and I highly recommend trying the Bangalore Masala Dosa, Mysore Masala Dosa, Neer Dosa, Thattu Idli, and their delightful Rose Milk.
  • Seena Bhai 1977 Dosa Centre

Seena Bhai Tiffin Centre, established in 1999, has become a famous landmark in Sowcarpet, attracting visitors from far away just to savor their fresh Idlis and Onion Podi Uthappam. The Uthappam is cooked with ghee, which adds to its unique taste. Although it is a legendary dosa shop, no tables or chairs are available for dining.
  • Idli Vada Sambar

We visited this restaurant after reading a lot of good reviews online. It specializes in vegetarian food. The prices are reasonable, making it a decent option for those seeking authentic South Indian cuisine. Here we savoured delicious idlis and vadas with sambar, all of which were quite impressive.
  • Bharathi Mess

If you want to taste authentic Tamilian food, then visit Bharathi Mess, located in the narrow lanes of Triplicane. The restaurant is small, but it has pictures of the famous Tamil poet Subramanya Bharathi and his writings all over it. The menu includes Idli, Vazhapoo Vada (Banana Flower Fritters), Dosa, Veg Noodles, and Bonda. The restaurant is friendly, and the staff takes good care of their customers' health by not using Ajinomoto and offering healthy food options.
  • Kannappa Thattu Idly

This eatery is renowned for its Thattu Idli and is usually crowded on weekends. Customers may have to wait for at least 15 minutes to get their idlis. However, the food is worth the wait, as their idli and podi are perfect, and their dosas are amazing. The Ghee Podi Dosa is highly recommended. Their idlis are served with a generous helping of ghee and 'gun powder.' The prices are reasonable, so the food here is great value for money.
  • Ratna Cafe

The establishment has been around since 1948 and is bustling with customers due to its widespread popularity. My group and I ordered sambar idli, Rava Dosa, Masala Dosa, and Coffee. The sambar was noticeably darker and had a thick consistency. The idlis were soft and fluffy, and the dosas were good too. The hospitality was good, and my family enjoyed the Sambhar Idli, despite the slight delay in delivery.
