While you were sitting and pondering about life and vegetation in outer space, a chef and a space engineering student ended up launching a plate of Adana Kababs right into the space. Yes, you read that right. The internet never fails to amuse us with intriguing content. This latest piece of information is sure to delight foodies and lovers of astrophysics. Scientists have dedicated millions of hours to understand what kind of food can be carried to space, kebabs. Astronauts today can carry various things like nuts, cut-fruits, pre-packaged meals, curries etc. But rarely have we heard of a mission where a Kebab is allowed to take a flight right into the space.
Chef Yasar Aydn and Idris Albayrak, a space engineering student, tied an Adana Kebab to a helium balloon and launched it into space on Tuesday. The duo carried out the feat in Turkey’s Adana area, and since the Adana is renowned for its Kebab they chose to launch this particular variant of Kebab into the space on 12th April, the International Day of Human Space Flight. It was on this day that cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, completed the first orbit of earth.
For the uninitiated Adana Kebabs are long, slender kebabs that are often referred to as pipe kebabs due to their shape. It is prepared by minced meat that is pressed along long iron skewers. They look a lot like Seekh Kebabs, but the mixture of spices vary. Adana kebabs, though very rich in red meat, are not as rich in terms of spices. If you are a meat-lover, you would love how the meat shines through. They are also slightly chewy and chunky, and are best served with soft breads such as Saj bread and Yufka.
The video of chef Yasar Aydn and Idris Albayrak straight into the space was also uploaded by the Reuters on their official Twitter handle. In the video one can see a white base where the Kebabs, onions, charred tomatoes and red chillies were placed, the meal was then attached to a large helium balloon and a go pro camera, that helped take the aerial shot of the kebabs. A flag of Turkey was also tied with the kebabs. The ‘Space Kebabs’ as people are calling it, went up the height of almost 25 miles before it landed on Turkey’s southern coast in Dortoyol city, after the Helium balloon exploded.
