“You eat with your eyes first”, this is a popular saying amongst chefs. It alludes to the fact that a dish or any food is liked/disliked first based on its look. Right from its texture to its flavour can be pre-judged based on just the looks of a dish. And let’s just agree that we often are attracted towards a unique looking dish rather the bland ones, take viral food trends such as Dalgona for instance. People tried it just after its pictures and videos went viral on social media. And all the effort pays off well if the dish tastes as good as it looks. Rice balls, as we know them are easy and healthy snacks that we might have relished a lot of times. Steamed balls stuffed with a delicious filling, rice balls are fairly easy and quick to make. They also require just a few ingredients. However, in a recent video shared by an Instagram page, the humble rice balls have garnered attention not as a delicious dish but as a visual of amusement. Yes, you read that right. The simple rice balls have been transformed into a unique look that has been garnering attention in the form of praises and love from anyone who lays an eye on them.
Shared by @foodie_gujarati11, the Instagram video showcases the recipe for the now-viral rice balls. While one would think it is the usual recipe but what makes it stand out from other rice ball recipes is that the final product looks like nothing like the usual. The rice balls have spiked rice as the outer layer and are made with a mouth-watering stuffing of potatoes filling inside. The visual is such that the video has garnered over 5.4 million views, 290k likes and over 900 comments. Look at the video here:
The video starts by prepping the outer dough made with rice flour, cumin seeds and warm water. It then prepares a yummy potato stuffing full of masalas and chillies. The chef then makes round balls of dough and stuff potato stuffing into it. The stuffed balls are coated with soaked rice and left to steam. This quick, easy and genius recipe obviously raked in a lot of praise. While someone also pointed out how it looked like covid-19 particles, given its spherical design and rice spikes, most of the comments on the video showered countless praises. From amusement to love, people couldn’t be more impressed. Many commented on how creative the recipe was, whilst many thought the final product was too adorable to bite into.
One comment read 'First time mujhe laga ke jasmine ka flower hai, really amazing yaar' (At first look I thought it was jasmine flower, really amazing). While the other one read 'unique'. Some were even happy about how it was steamed, making it much healthier than the other street foods that are fried in tons of oil.
