Has another visually appealing colour intrigued teenagers? Clearly so. But a lot of adults are falling for it, too. A green coloured liquid ‘chlorophyll water’ has become some sort of a social media sensation.

While professionals claim that there is some research to show how chlorophyll can improve skin texture and treat acne, social media influencers have been boasting without second thoughts of the super beneficial properties of chlorophyll water by filming videos of drinking it. The hashtag #chlorophyll has about as many as 40 million views. While there are no side effects of using chlorophyll water, there is some reason for scepticism. If it was a miracle supplement, then would it be casually promoted via Tik Tok?

Furthermore, what influencers are using is not chlorophyll per se. Professionals claim that what people have been buying in bottles is not actually chlorophyll. What people are buying is a chemical called chlorophyllin that is made from chlorophyll. It can be purchased in a pill or liquid form.

Moreover, you wouldn’t think that a bottle of chlorophyllin was cheap, would you?

It can be found in health stores because it is packed with antioxidants which may have some important skin health benefits mentioned above. But is this enough to call it ‘the absolute best? Is the use of chlorophyll water been blown out of proportion on the internet?

In response, the professionals repeatedly state that there hasn’t been an overwhelming amount of research done to support the theory that chlorophyllin is the best. So we say, go with the word of the geniuses! Plants need chlorophyll more than humans do. We, as humans, must steer our diets in the right direction in order to see a change in our skin health. The salad greens are packed with fibre, vitamins and minerals which are not packed in drops of chlorophyllin. So why not just head to the grocery store instead? Just go with regular leafy foods which are already packed with all the benefits you need. What’s the benefit of just drinking chlorophyll water, in comparison? Would you see any change in skin? Maybe. But that puts you at risk of a weaker immune system since you miss out on all the other nutrient bases which can easily be gained by eating a healthy diet.
