Singapore Sling: How The Drink Helped Women Drink In Public?

As per the legends, this cocktail came into existence around the early twentieth century, when women were not allowed to drink alcohol in public, as they were only expected to drink tea.

When a bartender named Ngiam Tong Boon created the cocktail Singapore Sling it became a sensation overnight. It is believed that the talented barkeeper was working at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel, Singapore, and invented an alcoholic drink which was similar in appearance to a fruity mocktail. The bright colours of the drink masked the hard liquor, and soon the bar became a bustling place for high society women. Many also believe that there were several cocktails which were similar to the drink, that took birth around the same time, but only Singapore Sling survived among them. Over the decades, the drink has become a ubiquitous beverage in most well-to-do bars across the world.  

Singapore sling has a tarty taste with a punch of sweetness to it due to the use of pineapple and lime. The mélange of ingredients creates a beautiful layer of flavours, which is really a nice option for a rejuvenating evening cocktail. You can try to make this cocktail at home with this easy recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 22 ml gin
  • 25 ml cherry brandy
  • 7 ml Bénédictine
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 30 ml pineapple juice
  • 15 ml fresh lime juice
  • Club soda, chilled
  • Cherry, garnish (optional)

Preparations:

1. In a cocktail shaker or any shaker filled with ice cubes, pour the gin, cherry brandy, Bénédictine, Angostura bitters, lime juice, and pineapple juice. Shake them well and pour them into a glass.

2. Lastly, top it with club soda and garnish the Singapore Sling with cherry.
