Hypertension or high blood pressure is a lifestyle disease that has posed a severe concern for the world today. A condition where blood pressure against artery walls is constantly higher than usual, hypertension has about a million cases in India alone. Elevated blood pressure of more than 180/90 is a severe case of hypertension which may lead to increased risk of heart disease and stroke as well, if not managed well. While there are medications for the condition, experts have also advised many ways to control blood pressure levels; a major is altering lifestyle and dietary habits. Eliminating high salty, high trans-fat foods, including those with specific nutrients, minerals, and vitamins in the diet, is necessary. Potassium is a must for those with a condition of hypertension since it effectively minimises the blood pressure-raising effects of salt in our diet besides having protective abilities for the heart and the kidney. One should also steer clear of caffeinated drinks and alcohol, and certain beverages may help reduce blood pressure levels.
Three drinks to manage blood pressure levels:
1. Fenugreek Water
Rich in fibre, fenugreek (methi) helps control the blood pressure levels as fibre breaks down slowly in the body, avoiding any sudden spike in the blood pressure levels. This methi water is just what you need to start your day with. Soak a handful of fenugreek seeds in warm water and keep it overnight; drink in the morning empty stomach.
2. Lemon Water
This is perhaps one of the most common detox drinks, a solution to many health problems. According to many health experts, lemon water is a refreshing drink and can do wonders for our overall health. Lemon is enriched with vitamin C, which acts as an antioxidant, removing free radicals from our body besides making our blood vessels soft and flexible, lowering the blood pressure.
3. Chia Seeds-Infused Water
Brimming with omega-3 fatty acids, chia seeds work as a natural blood thinner, further reducing our blood pressure. You can soak chia seeds in water for an hour or so and drink them.
While hypertension is a condition that requires patience and mindful lifestyle changes, one should always consult an expert before adopting any dietary change.
