In what is another win for Indian spirits on a global platform, artisanal gin brand – Stranger & Sons won a gold medal at the prestigious Design and Packaging Masters of 2023 – a UK-based award platform. 45 days into its launch that happened in the month of September, the label and package design is meant to be reminiscent of the goings-on of an Indian forest. The case of the Sherry Cask Aged Gin displays bold colours and designs that are in tandem with the brand’s label – which also showcases a three-eyed tiger resting nonchalantly on a barrel – as one of the elements.

Conceptualised by a design duo – Oveja Fresca and Remi Basoalto from Argentina – the usage of colour and visual symbolism is representative of the honey notes of the liquor that are echoed in gold. Speaking of the inspiration behind the design, a caption on the brand’s social media page states, “Even in the thick foliage, the Mythical Being is unmissable; she rests majestically upon a sherry cask, paying homage to the woody whispers of our gin. Seek more to discover her friends in tow, holding an old-fashioned decanter and plucking the berries. And if you fail to spot the wild honey, know that the gold accents on the stamp are no coincidence.”

Aged in two different sherry barrels – namely Amontillado and Oloroso Sherry, the limited-edition gin has a mouthfeel similar to that of well-aged whiskey. Meant to be sipped slowly in order to taste the cascara and honey, the box also displays a trumpet-playing monkey and a fox walking on two legs. Established in 2018, Stranger & Sons are no stranger to accolades – having previously produced some award-winning gins in collaboration with Australia’s Four Pillars Gin and the first distilled cocktail for India that was crafted in partnership with The Bombay Canteen in Mumbai.

The award-winning Sherry Cask Aged Gin is also accompanied by a Grapefruit Garnish Spray – which is meant to add a burst of fruity freshness, thus enhancing the sipping experience. Bottles of this gin are available in the cities of Mumbai, Pune, Goa and Bangalore, at select stores. With a sweet and smooth mouthfeel, and a hint of woody notes, the bottle of artisanal gin stands proud among other contemporaries that also bagged awards this year. Some of them include Tanqueray No. 10 gin, Bombay Sapphire Premier Cru Tuscan Juniper and Italy’s Erbe Gin that garnered praise for their design sensibilities.
