Independence Day Special: Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar Recommends 5 Healthy Local Foods

With Independence Day just around the corner, we are all indulging in all things desi. It is, after all, a day to celebrate India in all its beauty. On the special occasion, celebrity nutritionist and #vocalforlocal advocate Rujuta Diwekar is urging us to revisit our roots. In her latest audiobook ‘Eating in the Age of Dieting’ which is available on Audible.in, she shares 5 local foods that should be part of your daily diet soon for their tremendous health benefits.

1. Mango

Mango is available only for a couple of months, and hence it would be a crime of sorts to not make the most of it. Rujuta says in her book, that if you want to look like a queen, you will need company of “this king of fruits.” In addition to tasting incredible, mangoes could help cleanse your system. Try soaking it in water for 20-30 minutes before eating.

2. Cashew Apple

Another local food that is slowly losing its prominence in India, cashew apples have five times more vitamin C than orange, says Rujuta. The tangy fruit is enriched with good carbs and has excellent antitumor and antimicrobial properties too.

3. Gajar Ka Halwa

Shocked to spot your favourite dessert in a ‘healthy foods’ list. Well, the sinful dessert may not be as bad for your health as made out to be, provided it is made with good quality, seasonal carrots. If it is cooked with love, warmth and care in your kitchen, “it always is 100 times healthier than cereals”, says Rujuta.

4. Amla

It is bitter, it is tarty, but it has to be part of your diet if you want stronger immunity and boost your overall health. Amla is also one of the most potent home remedies for flaky scalps and scaly skin. Rich in iron, magnesium, vitamin B, amla helps soothe nerves, and combat ageing with its strong network of phytonutrients. The winter fruit can be consumed as is or had as Chyavanprash, pickle, sharbat or even Murabba, Rujuta suggests in her audiobook.

5. Tilgul

This winter delicacy is loaded with essential fatty acids. It also happens to be one of the richest non-dairy sources of calcium. Additionally, it is also replete with essential fats, copper, magnesium and zinc. By lubricating joints, it also helps get rid of joint pains that are so common in winter.
