North-Indians love 'rajma chawal’. But is it the only dish that can be prepared with kidney beans? It's time to spin the wheel to some videshi dishes of kidney beans. Canned and dried kidney beans are high in fibre and an excellent source of protein. You can make tons of satisfying dishes with this one magical ingredient. Here are some easy-savoury recipes that you can include in your 3-course meal. 

Breakfast Recipe

Begin your day with ‘kidney bean salad’. It is a new start to incorporate protein into your diet by boosting your body's power nutrients. 

Ingredients you need for kidney bean salad :

  • ½ cup kidney beans (rajma)
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 1 tomato (chopped)
  • 2-3 green chilli (finely chopped)
  • 3 tsp lemon juice 
  • 2 tbsp roasted peanuts (crushed)
  • 2 tsp olive oil 
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Fresh coriander (chopped)

Instructions:

  1. Soak the kidney beans in water for 6-8 hours. 
  2. Drain and put beans in the pressure cooker. 
  3. Add 1 tsp salt along with 3 cups of water and cook until beans are softened. 
  4. Drain the water, and you can use this water later to make curries or kneading dough. 
  5. Add boiled kidney beans to a bowl. 
  6. Mix up with all chopped ingredients and sprinkle crushed peanuts on the top.

Lunch Recipe

Give your lunch a Mexican twist. 'Kidney bean sandwich' is perfect for a wholesome lunch meal.

Ingredients you need for kidney bean sandwich:

  • ½ cup kidney beans (boiled)
  • Bread slice 
  • 1 tbsp tomato puree
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 1 boiled potato (mashed)
  • ¼ tsp smoked paprika/ red chilli powder 
  • Processed cheese
  • 1 tsp butter 
  • Salt & black pepper to taste 

Instructions: 

  1. Heat the pan with butter, add onions and a pinch of salt, let them saute it. 
  2. Add mashed potato, smoked paprika, tomato puree, and saute them on a low flame in the same pan. 
  3. Add rajma and again a pinch of salt, black pepper. Mix and simmer them thoroughly. Once it is done, keep aside. 
  4. Take slices of bread, spread the stuffing on the bread, grate the processed cheese, and cover it with another bread slice. 
  5. Heat the butter on the grilling Tawa, place the stuffed bread and grill it from both sides with butter. (you can also have this as non-grilled)
  6. Cut the sandwich into a triangular shape. 

Serve rajma sandwiches with tomato or mayonnaise. 

Dinner Recipe

Authentically we can’t resist ourselves by eating ‘Rajma Chawal’. Sharing with you the last meal of the day, an authentic rajma rice recipe. 

Ingredients you need for kidney beans curry:

  • 1 cup rajma (boiled)
  • 1 cup ghee 
  • ¼ tsp asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds 
  • 1 tsp sonth (dried ginger powder)
  • ½ cup curd
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder 
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 2-3 green chillies 
  • 2 tbsp ginger garlic paste 
  • Fresh coriander (chopped) 

Instructions:

  1. Take the boiled rajma, heat the ghee in the pan, add asafoetida, cumin seeds once they splutter. 
  2. Add ginger-garlic paste, curd, sonth, and stir all the time vigorously. (else the curd will curdle).
  3. Saute till oil separates, add salt, red chilli, coriander powder, garam masala. Saute them and so on. 
  4. Add boiled rajma into the pan with 1 cup of water. 
  5. Simmer it for 10-15 minutes. Once it is cooked, garnish it with freshly chopped coriander leaves. 

Serve hot with plain white rice and raita aside.
