Sweet Treats

Mahua flowers are widely used in the making of classic Indian desserts including halwa, ladoo, and barfi. They have a naturally high sugar content.

Dried mahua flowers are pounded into a fine powder and cooked with ghee, milk, sugar, and semolina (rava) to make mahua halwa. The end product is delicious and rich in nutrients.

Similarly, the powder made from the flower can be combined with sugar and khoya (reduced milk) to make mahua barfi. After cooling the mixture is put on a pan and cut into pieces. The mahua flowers must first be dried and ground into a fine powder before being used to produce mahua ladoos. Ghee should be heated in a pan before the ground mahua flour is added and gently roasted until aromatic. Next, incorporate the grated jaggery and stir thoroughly until it melts and blends with the flour. After the mixture has cooled a little, shape it into ladoos or little round balls.

The drink bears significance, and people believe that it also has medicinal benefits as it helps in digestion and is good for generating body heat in winter.
