Crispy Chinese Bhel: Try This No-Onion, No-Garlic Recipe

Crispy, crunchy, and tasty, Chinese Bhel is a flavourful dish which can be served anytime in the day. It is a blend of boiled and fried noodles with Indian as well as Chinese sauces and sauteed veggies such as cabbage, carrot, capsicum, and French beans. The recipe is easy to make at home and can be prepared quickly.

It is a ready to eat dish, which can be prepared without onion or garlic. It needs to be served quickly after preparing otherwise it can turn soggy. It is an Indo-Chinese Fusion Street food that is popular in Mumbai. The recipe is not much served at restaurants but it is easily available at every other food stall in Mumbai.

The dish can be prepared spicy or mild as per your taste. You can add schezwan sauce to make it spicier. It is a unique and colourful dish which can be served to guests. Here’s how to prepare this delightful recipe at home. 

Here’s the recipe for Chinese Bhel.

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Servings: 2

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup wheat noodles (boiled and fried)
  • 2 carrots (thinly sliced)
  • 1 green bell pepper (thinly sliced)
  • 10 green beans (thinly sliced)
  • 2 tsp soy sauce 
  • 2 tsp red chilli sauce
  • 1 tsp tomato ketchup
  • Salt, to taste
  • Whole black peppercorns (crushed)
  • 2 sprigs of coriander leaves (chopped)

Method:

  • Boil the noodles in a saucepan with hot water, a little oil and a pinch of salt.
  • Cook these noodles until half done (it will take approximately 5-10 minutes to boil noodles).
  • Now, add oil followed by French beans and carrot strips in the saucepan and saute them for 2-3 minutes.
  • Include green capsicum strips and mix it again for 2 minutes.
  • Next, add cabbage strips, red chilli sauce, soya sauce, tomato ketchup, sugar, and salt to the pan. 
  • Mix all the ingredients properly and cook for 2 minutes.
  • Once done, leave the mixture aside for a while at room temperature.
  • Next, deep fry the boiled noodles until they change to a golden brown, or air-fry them as per your choice. 
  • Once done, leave them aside for a while at room temperature. 
  • After some time, crumble them using your hands.
  • In this step, include these fried noodles into the vegetable mixture and blend them again for a few minutes. 
  • Now, garnish this Chinese Bhel with coriander leaves.
  • The Chinese Bhel is ready to be served.

Points to remember:

  • The dish can become soggy if not served immediately after preparation. 
  • You can add spices according to your taste and preference.
  • You can also add more sauces as well as vegetables to it.
  • Don’t over boil the noodles, otherwise the recipe can become soggy in no time.
