Refreshing and fruity with a kick from the alcohol, this beverage is perfect to sip on a night out with friends. If it's your plan to have a fun night in, there’s only a few ingredients you need to make this drink at home. You’ll need wine and brandy for the concoction. The fruits that go into it include apples, peaches, and raspberries. For added flavour, add vanilla essence and citrus flavoured sparkling water, and your sangria is ready.
Dating back to 200 BC, sangria is a traditional beverage with a long history. The Romans began naming wine and wine-based drinks sangria. When they invaded Spain, the latter started planting grapes to make and trade wine. Since water was quite contaminated and unsafe for consumption at the time, alcohol would go some way in killing those bacterias. Over time, people started adding fruits to their drinks, the flavours of which enchanted and excited. To pack in more of a punch, brandy was later added to the mix. By the 1700s, sangria had gained populariry across much of Europe. It was in the mid-1900s that sangria made it's way to the US, and soon gained popularity all over the world.
Sangria is also a relatively health indulgence, combining the wine’s antioxidants with the vitamins and nutrients of the fruits, although the sugar that’s often added to the mix means it's best taken in moderation.
