Directions: Wholemeal Date Scones Recipe

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  • STEP 2.In a large bowl, combine the wholemeal flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • STEP 3.Add the cold butter to the flour mixture and use your fingers to rub it in until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  • STEP 4.Stir in the chopped dates and make a well in the center of the mixture.
  • STEP 5.Pour in the milk and use a fork to mix until the dough comes together.
  • STEP 6.Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together.
  • STEP 7.Pat the dough into a 2cm (3/4 inch) thick round and use a round cutter to cut out scones.
  • STEP 8.Place the scones onto the prepared baking tray and brush the tops with a little milk.
  • STEP 9.Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • STEP 10.Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.

Cooking Tips

  • Make sure the butter is cold and cut into small cubes for easier incorporation into the flour mixture.
  • Do not overmix the dough, as this can result in tough scones. Mix until just combined.
  • If you don't have a round cutter, you can use a glass or simply shape the dough into triangles.
  • For added sweetness, you can sprinkle a little sugar on top of the scones before baking.

Storage and Serving

  • These scones are best served warm or at room temperature.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • To reheat, place the scones in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for a few minutes until warmed through.
  • Serve the scones with butter, jam, or clotted cream for a delicious treat.
