Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Wash and cook the lentils until soft. Set aside.
  • STEP 2.In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and curry leaves. Let them splutter.
  • STEP 3.Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
  • STEP 4.Add the cooked lentils and water. Bring to a boil and simmer for a few minutes.
  • STEP 5.In a separate pan, heat ghee and fry the garlic until golden brown. Add this tempering to the tomato saaru.
  • STEP 6.Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or as a side dish with idli or dosa.

Cooking Tips

  • You can adjust the consistency of the saaru by adding more or less water.
  • For a spicier version, add more red chili powder or green chilies.
  • To enhance the flavor, you can also add a pinch of asafoetida (hing) while tempering.
