A spicy tasty accompaniment for idli/ dosa made from dry coconut (kopra) ground with roasted dals, red chilli, tamarind and flavoured with asafoetida (hing). Thengai milagai podi is a dry chutney powder made using roasted coconut, urad dal and red chilli. This is similar to our conventional chilli. This can be mixed directly with hot rice, add a teaspoon of gingelli oil and enjoy with sutta appalam. In this recipe we add roasted coconut essentially.

Ingredients for Thengai Milagai Podi Recipe

  • 1/4 cup Chana dal
  • 1/4 cup Split urad dal
  • 2 tablespoon Sesame Seeds
  • 1 cup Dry coconut
  • 10 Nos Dry red chillies
  • 30 gram Tamarind
  • 1 teaspoon Asafoetida
  • As required Salt

Directions: Thengai Milagai Podi Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.In a preheated pan add ¼ cup chana dal and roast on low to medium heat till golden brown. Keep aside.

step 2

  • STEP 1.Roast ¼ cup split white urad dal till golden brown and crispy.keep aside

step 3

  • STEP 1.Roast 2 tbsp sesame seeds till the start crackling. Keep aside

step 4

  • STEP 1.Roast 8 to 10 dry red chillies till crisp. Keep aside

step 5

  • STEP 1.Roast 1 cup dry coconut (kopra) till golden brown. Keep aside.

step 6

  • STEP 1.In a mixer grinder jar add the roasted dals, dry red chillies, coconut along with 30 gms tamarind and 1 tsp asafoetida.

step 7

  • STEP 1.Blend to make a coarse powder. Add salt to taste and blitz again. Serve with idli dosa.
