A savoury breakfast dish made from rava/ semolina/ sooji and vegetables like carrots, beans, onion, gingerm garlic, chillies curry leaves, corriande leaves with some cooked urad dal and is cooked in clarrified butter or ghee. Tempered with musturd seeds this is a light, healthy and tasty breakfast dish that can be prepared in no time.

Ingredients for Rava Upma Recipe

  • 1 cup Rava
  • 3.50 cup Water
  • 1/4 cup Carrots
  • 1/4 cup Beans
  • 2.50 tablespoon Ghee
  • 0.33 teaspoon Mustard Seed
  • 1 teaspoon Split urad dal
  • 1 No.s Onion
  • 1 piece Ginger
  • 1 No.s Green chilli
  • 1 sprig Curry Leaves
  • 1 No.s Lime
  • As required Coriander leaves A few

Directions: Rava Upma Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.Fill a pan with 3 ½ cups of water and put it on the heat. Add ¼ cup finely chopped carrots,¼ cup finely chopped beans. Bring to a brisk boil and then turn the heat to low.

step 2

  • STEP 1.Preheat another pan and add 2 tbsp ghee, ½ tsp mustard seeds, ½ tsp split urad dal.stirring on low heat allow the mustard seeds to crackle and the dal to turn light golden brown .

  • STEP 1.At this stage add 1 chopped onion, 1 inch chopped ginger, 1 green chilli chopped or slit,and saute till the onions softens and turn slightly pinkish. Do not caramelise the onions.

  • STEP 1.To this add the rava and roast it on low to medium heat mixing well for 30 to 40 seconds till the raw smell of the rava goes away.

step 5

  • STEP 1.Gradually add the water that has been simmering and keep stirring to avoid lumps forming. The rava will absorb all the water.

step 6

  • STEP 1.Add 1 to ½ tbsp ghee, 1 sprig of torn curry leaf, mix well and cover the pan. Cook on simmer for 3 to 4 minutes. Every few minutes check the consistency of the rava upma. If it thickens too much add 1tbsp or so of warm water.

step 7

  • STEP 1.Lastly squeeze the juice of 1 lemon into the upma and garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Turn off the heat. Rava upma is ready.
