  • 1/2 cup Moth Beans, Soaked Overnight
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • As required Salt To Taste
  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • as needed A Few Curry Leaves
  • 1/2 Onion, Finely Chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1 Tomatoes, Chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • 0.13 cup Grated Coconut
  • as needed Chopped Coriander Leaves For Garnish

Directions: Moth Bean Usal Recipe

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Soak the moth beans in water overnight or for at least 6 hours.
  • STEP 2.Drain the soaked beans and rinse them well.
  • STEP 3.In a pressure cooker, add the soaked beans, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the beans are tender.
  • STEP 4.In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add cumin seeds, curry leaves, and chopped onions. Saute until the onions turn golden brown.
  • STEP 5.Add ginger-garlic paste and saute for a minute.
  • STEP 6.Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft.
  • STEP 7.Add red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and garam masala. Mix well.
  • STEP 8.Add the cooked moth beans along with the water. Mix everything together.
  • STEP 9.Add grated coconut and mix well. Cook for another 5 minutes.
  • STEP 10.Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.

Cooking Tips

  • You can adjust the spice level according to your taste.
  • If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can cook the beans in a regular pot, but it will take longer.
  • You can add vegetables like potatoes or peas to make it more nutritious and flavorful.

  • Moth bean usal can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat the curry before serving and add a little water if needed to adjust the consistency.
