A Sri Lankan dessert made with chana dal, coconut and string hopper flour which is a healthy dessert alternative as it uses jaggery for sweetness instead of sugar. Sweet Stuffed String Hoppers recipe with step by step pictures and instructions. Lavariya is sweet stuffed string hoppers which is very popular in Sri lanka as tea time snack. We can have these for Breakfast or Dinner too. This is very similar to our kozhukatai but made with idiyappam. Stuffing is made with coconut and jaggery.

Ingredients for Lavariya Recipe

  • 0.08 cup chana dal
  • As required Water
  • 0.17 cup grated coconut
  • 0.13 cup Jaggery
  • pinch Salt
  • 0.17 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 0.33 cup string hopper flour

Directions: Lavariya Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.In a bowl take string hopper flour, pinch of salt and gradually add hot water in order to make a soft dough.

step 2

  • STEP 1.Take chana dal and water in a pressure cooker, cover and cook it for four whistles.

step 3

  • STEP 1.In a pan take jaggery and 2 tbsp of water and cook it till jaggery melts.

step 4

  • STEP 1.Now add grated coconut, cooked chana dal, salt and cardamom powder.

step 5

  • STEP 1.Take a noodle maker and press the prepared dough with it on a banana leaf and pour the prepared chana picture on top.

step 6

  • STEP 1.Fold it in half and steam cook using an idli maker covered with cotton cloth for 10 minutes on high flame.

step 7

  • STEP 1.Take it out after 10 minutes and your lavariya is ready.
