A classic Guyanese frozen treat made with evaporated milk, lots of nutmeg, cinnamon, and Custard Powder. Custard block, is simply frozen Guyanese vanilla custard and is different than homemade Guyanese ice cream. Although many people call ice cream, frozen custard. Traditionally, custard block is made with milk, sugar, spices and Bird’s Custard Powder. Custard powder is simply cornstarch, annatto powder (for color) and artificial flavoring (to give it the vanilla taste). Simply make a slurry by dissolving the cornstarch in some of your liquid, then add the slurry to your liquid to make a thickened egg free custard.

Ingredients for Guyanese Custard Block Recipe

  • 3 cup evaporated milk
  • 1.50 cup Water
  • 1 cup condensed milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla or mixed essence
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 2 tablespoon custard powder

Directions: Guyanese Custard Block Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.In a pot add water, evaporated milk, vanilla essence and condensed milk. Add in freshly grated nutmeg and salt to the pot and give it a stir and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Turn off the flame and set the milk mixture aside.

step 2

  • STEP 1.In a bowl take your custard powder and add in a few tablespoons of milk mix to it. Whisk it well so there are no lumps in it. Add in the custard slurry into the milk pot and mix it well. Let it cool for a while. Pour the prepared mixture into the popsicle and into the freezer for 5 hours. serve fresh.
