Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Wash and pressure cook the lentils until soft.
  • STEP 2.In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and curry leaves.
  • STEP 3.Add chopped spring onions, tomatoes, and turmeric powder. Cook until the onions are soft.
  • STEP 4.Add sambar powder, tamarind pulp, and cooked lentils. Mix well and simmer for a few minutes.
  • STEP 5.In a separate pan, heat ghee and fry the tempering ingredients. Add it to the sambar.
  • STEP 6.Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or idli/dosa.

Cooking Tips

  • You can adjust the consistency of the sambar by adding more or less water.
  • If you don't have sambar powder, you can use a combination of red chili powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder.
