Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x9-inch baking dish.
  • STEP 2.In a large bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • STEP 3.Press half of the oat mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  • STEP 4.In a saucepan, combine the dates, water, sugar, and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until the dates are soft and the mixture thickens, stirring occasionally.
  • STEP 5.Spread the date mixture evenly over the oat crust in the baking dish.
  • STEP 6.Crumble the remaining oat mixture over the top of the date filling.
  • STEP 7.Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • STEP 8.Allow the date squares to cool completely before cutting into squares.
  • STEP 9.Store the date squares in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Cooking Tips

  • Make sure to use fresh dates for the best flavor and texture.
  • If the date mixture is too thick, you can add a little more water to thin it out.
  • For an extra touch of sweetness, sprinkle some powdered sugar on top of the cooled date squares before serving.

Storage and Serving

  • Serve the date squares warm or at room temperature.
  • These squares are delicious on their own, but you can also serve them with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • To store, place the date squares in an airtight container at room temperature. They will stay fresh for up to 5 days.
