In French, the term ‘cordon bleu’ means ‘blue ribbon’ and is rooted in the special order of French knights. Henry III of France commanded that the highest order of knighthood be marked with a blue ribbon, in 1578. Since then, the term has been used to describe high quality food prepared by excellent cooks. It is believed that chicken cordon bleu was derived from the dish veal kiev. Veak kiev, which consists of veal dredged in breadcrumbs and fried, was born in Paris in the late 1840s. Later, Moscow adapted the dish and substituted veal with chicken. The dish, similar to a chicken schnitzel, was first mentioned in a cookbook in 1949 in Switzerland. Veal cordon bleu was recorded in print in 1955 in the US, while chicken cordon bleu only made an appearance in 1967. Contrary to popular perception, chicken cordon bleu has no connection with the culinary institute Le Cordon Bleu.

Ingredients for Chicken Cordon Bleu Recipe

  • 2 piece Boneless Chicken Breast
  • 2 piece sliced ham
  • 2 piece sliced cheese
  • 2 Egg
  • 1/2 cup Flour
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • As required Salt
  • As required Ground black pepper
  • As required Cooking Oil

Steps To Prepare

  • STEP 1.Pound chicken breast until ¼ inch in thickness.
  • STEP 1.Rub both sides of the chicken with salt.
  • STEP 2.Top chicken breast with sliced ham and cheese and then roll the chicken.
  • STEP 3.Tightly wrap the chicken in plastic wrap to shape it, and twist remaining the plastic on the sides and tie it. You can even use toothpicks to fasten the chicken.
  • STEP 4.Chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • STEP 5.In a separate serving dish, season flour, egg and bread crumbs with salt and pepper.
  • STEP 6.Mix well.
  • STEP 7.Then dredge the rolled chicken in flour, coat in beaten egg and roll in bread crumbs.

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Heat enough cooking oil to deep fry in a pan and fry the breaded rolled chicken until golden brown.
  • STEP 8.Drain the excess oil with a paper towel. Slice the chicken and it’s ready to serve!
