A tasty monsoon snack or dessert of halwa made from besan flour (chana dal flour) cooked in ghee and sugar. Besan halwan is a delicious and aromatic dessert made of gram flour, ghee, sugar and nuts. It is one of halwa varities of India that is most common and easy to make dessert. The use of lentils can also differ and the amount of sugar can be controlled according to preference.

Ingredients for Besan Halwa Recipe

  • 1/2 cup Ghee
  • 1 cup Besan
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 2.50 cup Water
  • As required Chopped almonds or roasted cashew nuts for garnish

Directions: Besan Halwa Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.Preheat a pan and add ½ cup ghee and 1 cup besan (gram flour). Stir on medium heat and mix the two ingredients together. The ghee will melt and the flour wil roast and combine with the ghee to form a thick mixture.

step 2

  • STEP 1.Turn the heat to low and allow to cook for 4 to 5 minutes. Keep stirring. The mixture will change colour to a darker yellow and the raw smell will disappear.

  • STEP 1.Put another pan on a different burner and add 2 ½ cups of water and ½ cup sugar. Turn on the heat and stir the sugar to dissolve it. Let the sugar water mixture come to a brisk boil.

step 4

  • STEP 1.Add a little sugar water at a time to the besan ghee mixture and stir continuously as the besan absorbs all the water and the halwa comes together. Once all the water has been added, keep stirring the halwa till it completely comes together and thickens and begins to pull away form the sides of the pan.at this stage the halwa will be ready.

step 5

  • STEP 1.Lastly add chopped almonds or roasted cashew nuts. Serve warm.
