Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Rinse the arhar dal under running water until the water runs clear.
  • STEP 2.In a pressure cooker, add the dal along with water, turmeric powder, and salt.
  • STEP 3.Pressure cook the dal for about 4-5 whistles or until it is soft and mushy.
  • STEP 4.In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and dried red chilies.
  • STEP 5.Once the seeds start to splutter, add chopped onions, garlic, and ginger. Saute until the onions turn golden brown.
  • STEP 6.Add chopped tomatoes, green chilies, and spices like turmeric, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
  • STEP 7.Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix well. Simmer for a few minutes until the flavors blend together.
  • STEP 8.Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.

  • Soaking the dal for 30 minutes before cooking can help reduce the cooking time.
  • You can adjust the consistency of the dal by adding more or less water, depending on your preference.
