World Rum Day: Mix Up These Classic Rum Cocktails To Enjoy

In the realm of mixology, enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike eagerly anticipate the arrival of World Rum Day, a cherished annual celebration focusing on the adored elixir known as rum. In a delightful tradition that takes place annually on the second Saturday of July, rum enthusiasts and experts from every corner of the globe unite to honour and revel in the splendid tapestry of history and flavours that define this beloved drink. This year the rum day will be celebrated on 8 July 2023.  

The history of rum, the spirit most commonly associated with the Caribbean and laid-back island living, is intriguing and spans centuries. From its humble beginnings in the Caribbean sugarcane plantations to its current status as an internationally popular spirit, rum has won the hearts of many thanks to its adaptability and unique personality. 

In celebration of World Rum Day, let's mix up some timeless drinks guaranteed to get you in the party mood. Here are the cocktail recipes shared by Monika Alcobev.

Cuba Libre 

Ingredients:  

50 ml of Viva El Ron 

120 ml of cola 

15 ml of freshly squeezed lime juice 

Ice cubes 

Lime wedge, for garnish 

Method: Fill a highball glass with ice cubes. Measure and pour 50 ml of light rum into the glass. Squeeze the juice of half a lime to obtain approximately 15 ml of lime juice. Add it to the glass. Slowly pour 120 ml of cola into the glass. Gently stir the ingredients together using a cocktail stirrer or a long spoon. Be careful not to disturb the carbonation too much. Garnish the glass with a lime wedge by sliding it onto the rim. 

Piña Colada 

Ingredients: 

60 ml Viva El Ron 

90 ml pineapple juice 

30 ml coconut cream 

Pineapple wedge (for garnish) 

Toasted coconut flakes (for garnish) 

Method: Combine rum, pineapple juice, and coconut cream in a blender. Add a cup of crushed ice and blend until smooth. Pour into a tall glass and garnish with a pineapple wedge and a sprinkle of toasted coconut flakes.  

Coconut Rum Martini 

Ingredients 

60 ml Viva El Ron 

30 ml coconut water 

15 ml simple syrup 

Shredded coconut (for rimming) 

Lime twist (for garnish) 

Method: Rim a chilled martini glass with shredded coconut. Shake rum, coconut water, and simple syrup with ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain into the prepared glass. Garnish with a lime twist. 

Rum Sour Fizz

Ingredients: 

45 ml Viva El Ron 

30 ml fresh lemon juice 

15 ml simple syrup 

15 ml egg white 

Club soda 

Lemon twist (for garnish) 

Method: Shake rum, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white with ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain into a glass filled with ice. Top it off with club soda. Garnish with a lemon twist. 

Ashanti Old Fashioned 

Ingredients:

60 ml Ashanti Spiced Rum 

5 ml simple syrup 

2 dashes Spice Route Bitters 

Orange peel (for garnish) 

Method: In an Old Fashioned glass, muddle the orange peel and simple syrup. Add the Ashanti Spiced Rum and bitters. Fill the glass with ice cubes and stir gently until chilled. Garnish with an orange peel twist. 

Caribbean Mule

Ingredients 

60 ml Ashanti Spiced Rum 

15 ml lime juice 

120 ml ginger beer 

Lime wedge (for garnish) 

Method: Fill a copper mug or highball glass with ice cubes. Add Ashanti Spiced Rum and lime juice. Top with ginger beer and stir gently. Garnish with a lime wedge. 

Spiced Rum Sour 

Ingredients: 

60 ml Ashanti Spiced Rum 

30 ml lemon juice 

15 ml simple syrup 

1 egg white 

Lemon twist (for garnish) 

Method: In a cocktail shaker, combine Ashanti Spiced Rum, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white. Shake vigorously without ice to emulsify the egg white. Add ice and shake again until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice cubes. Garnish with a lemon twist. 

Tropical Rum Collins 

Ingredients: 

45 ml Ashanti Spiced Rum 

30 ml pineapple juice 

15 ml lime juice 

15 ml simple syrup 

Club soda 

Pineapple wedge and cherry, for garnish 

Method: Fill a Collins glass with ice cubes. In a shaker, combine Ashanti Spiced Rum, pineapple juice, lime juice, and simple syrup. Shake well to mix the ingredients. Strain the mixture into the Collins glass over the ice. Top it off with club soda, leaving some room at the top for garnish. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a cherry on a cocktail pick. 

Mango Mojito 

Ingredients: 

60 ml Bush Rum Mango 

30 ml fresh lime juice 

20 ml simple syrup 

6-8 fresh mint leaves 

Soda water 

Lime wedges and mint sprigs (for garnish) 

Method: In a glass, muddle the mint leaves with lime juice and simple syrup. Fill the glass with ice cubes. Add Bush Rum Mango and stir gently. Top with soda water. Garnish with lime wedges and mint sprigs. 

Tropical Sunrise 

Ingredients 

60 ml Bush Rum Mango 

90 ml pineapple juice 

30 ml orange juice 

15 ml grenadine syrup 

Pineapple slice and cherry (for garnish) 

Method: Fill a tall glass with ice cubes. Pour Bush Rum Mango over the ice. In a shaker, combine pineapple juice and orange juice. Slowly pour the juice mixture over the rum in the glass. Drizzle grenadine syrup down the side of the glass to create a layered effect. Garnish with a pineapple slice and a cherry. 

Mango Daiquiri 

Ingredients 

60 ml Bush Rum Mango 

30 ml fresh lime juice 

15 ml simple syrup 

1 cup frozen mango chunks 

Lime wheel (for garnish) 

Method: Add frozen mango chunks, Bush Rum Mango, lime juice, and simple syrup to a blender. Blend until smooth and creamy. Pour into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wheel. Sip and savor the tropical flavors.  

Mango Martini 

Ingredients 

60 ml Bush Rum Mango 

30 ml mango puree 

15 ml lime juice 

15 ml simple syrup 

Mango slice (for garnish) 

Method: In a shaker, combine Bush Rum Mango, mango puree, lime juice, and simple syrup with ice. Shake well until chilled. Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a mango slice. 

Citrus Rum Punch 

Ingredients:

90 ml Bush Rum Tropical Citrus 

45 ml orange juice 

45 ml pineapple juice 

15 ml lime juice 

15 ml grenadine syrup 

Orange slice and cherry for garnish 

Method: Combine all the ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake well. Strain the mixture into a glass filled with ice. Garnish with an orange slice and cherry. 

Tropical Citrus Sour 

Ingredients: 

60 ml Bush Rum Tropical Citrus 

30 ml lemon juice 

15 ml simple syrup 

Dash of orange bitters 

Lemon twist for garnish 

Method: Combine all the ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist. 

Citrus Rum Fizz 

Ingredients:

45 ml Bush Rum Tropical Citrus 

 30 ml grapefruit juice 

15 ml lemon juice 

15 ml simple syrup 

Soda water 

Grapefruit slice for garnish 

Method: In a shaker, combine the Bush Rum Tropical Citrus, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, and simple syrup with ice. Shake well and strain into a tall glass filled with ice. Top with soda water and garnish with a grapefruit slice. 

Tropical Citrus Margarita 

Ingredients: 

60 ml Bush Rum Tropical Citrus 

30 ml fresh lime juice 

15 ml triple sec 

15 ml agave syrup 

Salt rim and lime wedge for garnish 

Method: Rim a margarita glass with salt. In a shaker, combine Bush Rum Tropical Citrus, lime juice, triple sec, and agave syrup with ice. Shake well and strain into the prepared glass filled with ice. Garnish with a lime wedge.
