Though there are regional variations in pizza within Italy too, another place that is highly popular for pizzas is the United States. Have you ever wondered what makes American pizza different from the Italian creation? Let’s find out.
Crust is the key
Now we all know that when it comes to pizza, the crust is the key. It can make or break the deal. While the Italians have always preferred a thin-crust (sometimes as thin as crackers) pizza base, the Americans have varied choices. You’ll find a range of crust from thin and pan-crust to thick, deep-dish pizzas across the US.
Sauce makes all the difference
In Italy, pizza means something fresh. Often, Italians have looked down upon American pizza chains for using processed tomato sauces on the pizza base. Their approach to pizza is quite different. They prefer using pureed tomatoes along with some fresh basil leaves and cheese.
Top it all or not
We have gotten so used to putting a large variety of toppings on our pizzas that if we were to ever visit Italy, we might start to rethink the whole idea of pizza as our go-to food. Italians are invested in the notion of keeping it simple and traditional. So, they opt for minimal toppings and meat? That’s just out of question. Americans love the idea of stuffing the pizza with all they can find, bacon, ham, chicken, pork etc. Italians detest the idea of combining meat (which is in itself a savory meal) with a pizza.
The Italian pizzas are so light that you could have two or three of them. They are made this way because they are an on-the-go snack. Meanwhile, in New York, a deep-dish pizza could be your entire meal.
So, who wins? That remains to be seen in the times to come since both have their unique styles.
