A smoothie is a thick milky drink, prepared with fruits and yoghurt in a blender. It has become an absolute favourite of youngsters now-a-days who crave for quick breakfasts which are healthy and nutritious also. Usually smoothies contain milk, frozen fruit, yoghurt and other ingredients and condiments according to one’s taste and preference.
The word smoothie has been around since the 20th century. However, it wasn’t until the 1930 that people started using this term for a drink. During that health stores in America started selling smoothies after the invention of an electric blender. During the 70s, the craze of smoothies began spreading as people started experimenting with more flavours and fruit juices. During these years, health food stores started popping up all around the country and started selling a wide variety of soft blended drinks.
The history of smoothie is completely tied to the invention of a blender, as the latter being the primary appliance of making a smoothie. The waring blender was invented in the 1930s to blend the smoothie. Later in 1973, Steve Kahnau popularised the blender in the US. He had been experimenting with smoothies and came up with delicious smoothie recipes. In the next three years, his chain of stores started spreading across the US.
At the same time, smoothies started to become popular in cafes and restaurants. Later, companies like Naked Juice and Odwalla started selling smoothies in packed bottles. Today, no matter where you live, different kinds of smoothies are available all over grocery stores. A variety of smoothie recipes are available on social media platforms like instagram and facebook.
