Remember buying your first cup of Joe at Starbucks? While the frothy cup did bring you immense joy and you did find yourself in the ‘cool league’ for a fleeting moment, but what about the exorbitant amount you had to pay for a single cup? Does that make uncomfortable sometimes? Now, we are not trying to rub salt on your wounds, but there are eateries in India that are offering complete meals in almost one-tenth the amount you happened to spend.
In his recent tweet, business tycoon Harsh Goenka pointed out the stark differences in prices of Idlis that are sold in modest shops of Tamil Nadu versus the prices of coffee at Starbucks. The coffee giant has often come under radar for their seemingly high prices, and now it was Mr. Goenka’s turn to offer his take on the same. In his tweet he shared two pictures of the ‘Idli Market’ in Erode, Tamil Nadu that sells approximately 20000 idlis daily. He tweeted that two idlis cost only Rs.3.50 here and even if you include sambhar or chutney, you wouldn’t have to pay more than Rs. 6.50.
Commenting on the price difference he wrote, “India is an interesting country where a cup of Starbucks coffee costs Rs 250 and two yummy idlis cost Rs3.50!”
The netizens were quick to chime in, while some called out the coffee giant, some loyal fans defended it too. Calling Idli a ‘need’ while Starbucks a ‘want’.
Some also made interesting observations as to how same idli would cost more than Starbucks coffee abroad, since “it’s the brand value that sells”
Some observations got painfully real too, “same people haggling for 2/- with street vendor but leave a tip of 500-1000 in a five-star hotel !!”, a tweet read.
