Compared to their Western equivalents, Asian liqueurs provide new levels of flavour and perfume, so it's no wonder their mere mention evokes visions of the exotic. They are created with ume, a sour fruit comparable to plum and apricot; yuzu, a hybrid of lime, lemon, and grapefruit; and fragrant oolong and green tea.
They are created by adding some kind of liquor and sweetness to a base ingredient, just like other liqueurs. Additionally, they were initially prescribed for their therapeutic properties, just like many other liqueurs. For instance, the antioxidant-rich umeshu was frequently used to relieve aching muscles and treat colds and sore throats.
As is frequently the case with Asian cuisine and beverages, purity is a highly valued component. For instance, the Leona Sparkling Yuzu liqueur by Yamamoto Shuzo features a hint of flowery richness, acidity, and pleasant balance.
Asian liqueurs are also becoming popular among mixologists and bartenders, especially in light of the recent trend toward tea-related items. Visit any respectable cocktail establishment today to see this trend in action. Continue reading!
