Top 10 Spots For Bun Maska And Chai In Mumbai

Comforting food comes from the soul and simplicity is the secret to some of the best food in the world. Nothing embodies that concept quite as well as Bun Maska and Chai. Bread rolls (or buns) adorned with melted butter paired with a classic milky tea known as Irani chai. The humble bun maska has a rich history that traces back to the colonial era. Its tale commences with the Portuguese introduction of bread to the Indian subcontinent. Settling in places such as Goa and Mumbai, they brought with them their culinary customs, including the skill of bread baking. These early encounters laid the foundation for what would later transform into the cherished bun maska.

The tradition of bun maska in Irani cafes has roots that extend for decades. During the late 19th century, the Iranian community, having migrated from Iran, established themselves in Mumbai. To serve the local population, they opened small cafes and restaurants serving up dishes inspired by their roots and a selection of bakery offerings. Today, Bun Maska and Chai are a go-to breakfast for anyone looking for something cheap, cheerful and ultimately incredibly satisfying.

There are many places to find this invigorating combo in Mumbai but some places outshine the others. We spoke to some of the city’s foodies to get the scoop on which ones need to be on your bucket list.

Upon reaching the station, my gaze was drawn to an old uncle running a humble roadside stall, conjuring up magic with buns.”

“At 4:30 am, Uncle had 25-30 customers gathered around. The temptation was too strong to resist—Bun Maska - Jam and Nagori Chai. I could not resist the craving of having some fresh bun maska with chai, experiencing the morning magic for the first time. Fresh buns, generously adorned with butter and jam, met the comforting warmth of Nagori Chai. In that early morning hustle, amidst the crowd, those flavors captured not just my taste buds but a piece of my heart.”
