The popular Tirupati Temple is one of the most revered pilgrimages for Hindus. The recent infamous controversy of the presence of animal fat in the prasadam took the internet by storm as it affected the religious sentiments and beliefs of the Hindu community.
As per reports, the ghee used to make the laddus had animal fats, which is considered to be impure in Hinduism. Even though there are still tests running to confirm the presence, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) assured the devotees that they are changing the ghee vendor to ensure that the sanctity of the prasadam stays intact.
TTD Changed The Ghee Vendor
The Tirupati Laddu, a sweet offered to Lord Venkateswara and distributed to millions of devotees annually, is much more than a simple dessert. The holy prasadam is also a reflection of being a sacred entity, which is prepared for the bhog as well as to the pilgrims. Even after getting a GI (Geographical Indication) tag back in 2014, the controversy over finding Beef Tallow, Fish Oil, and Lard led to grave consequences and resentment.
While there has been no confirmation of the presence of animal fats, a report by Gujarat’s National Dairy Development Board (CALF) went viral on X, which further enraged the community and led to a media outrage.
Looking into the situation and to alter the aftereffects of the controversy, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the governing body of the Tirupati Temple, has changed its ghee vendor, marking a significant shift in the production process of the laddus. Reportedly, the ghee vendor will be switched to – Karnataka Milk Federation, which will help restore the sanctity of the holy laddus.
Reports suggest that TTD Executive Officer J. Syamala Rao addressed the rising concerns and said, “There will be no more compromise on the quality of the laddus and the quality of ghee used (to make it).” He also confirmed that the famous Brahmotsavam festival, which has more than 7 lakh pilgrims visiting the temple every year, will not suffer, and about 8 to 9 lakhs of laddus will be prepared with the pure ghee procured from the new vendor.
