There's no arguing that Delhi chaat is one of the best street foods in the country. Now a long-time Delhi dweller caused a stir on Reddit when they argued that nothing can beat Delhi when it comes to its chaats and Chhole Bhature.
While most users agreed with them and shared their own favourites, some took to Reddit to talk about other places that also boast good street food options. "I mean I have lived in Delhi for 18 years and after shifting from there i realised no city in India can beat the chaat items and chole bhature in taste, especially Street style.I really miss the carrot and radish achaar a lot tbh," the user wrote a few days ago on Reddit.
The post soon found attention and got several comments from street food lovers across the country. "Areyyy Delhi ke chhole bhature ke aage koi kuch bol sakta hai kyaaaaa," a fellow Reddit user agreed. Whereas other Delhiites commented on the quality of Delhi's chaats which has been going downhill lately.
"Bhature, Kulche, Chaat prices skyrocketed taste & quality degraded," one user wrote. Another shared. While another wrote," Agree, too many people just trying to get cash by cooking half-cooked maida."
Lucknow> Delhi When It Comes To Street Food?
Most Redditors pointed out that Lucknow and Varanasi are miles ahead of Delhi when it comes to street food and chaats. Interestingly, Lucknow, which is famed for its kebabs also produces some of the finest chaats and vegetarian street food in the country.
Be it the crunchy basket chaat (a crispy potato shelling filled with mashed potatoes, tangy chutney, lots of vegetables, and peas) and Malai Makhan to Aminabad's kachauris, Lucknow is a treasure trove of budget-friendly street foods.
"As someone who has travelled a lot, Lucknow street food is way better than others. Delhi does have good options but jo famous shops hain woh itni overhype hogayi hain ki price badhakar quality gira di hai, Lucknow on the other hand, even new shops are matching the standards of overhyped ones and still maintaining low prices," a Redditor wrote.
What Delhi Brings To The Table
Delhi's street food straddles several influences at once, be it Eastern, Chinese, Mughal or Punjabi. Be it a Chawri Bazaar breakfast of nagori halwa and puri, momos at Paharganj, nihari and khameeri roti in Old Delhi, parathas in Chandni Chowk or the pocket-friendly Chinese faire near Lajpat Nagar, Delhi has unparalleled diversity in popular cuisine.
However, the Reddit chain saw other people rooting for cities like Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata and Amritsar as well. "Mumbai's Paani Puri > Golgappe Sev Puri, Ragda Patties also take the cake. Delhi leads at Aloo Tikki, Dahi Bhalla. Overall Chaat round goes to Mumbai," one commenter shared. "Tbh, I've eaten better chhole bhature in pune. I came here 2 months ago and I've tried 3 renowned places. Also, I've eaten better momos in Pune," wrote another.
