This year Janmashtami falls on 30 August, 2021 and Hindus around the country are waiting for this auspicious day with much enthusiasm. On this holy day, many devotees show their excitement by holding a day-long fast. For the whole day, they don’t eat a single grain but are allowed to savour non-cereal foods like milk, fruits, dry fruits, sweets, drinks, sabudana-based dishes or other dishes which don’t include cereal. There are some devotees who choose to observe a 'Nirjala' vrat. In this type of fast they refrain themselves from even taking a sip of water along with any grain of food, for the entire day. They break their fast by offering 'bhog' and eat only at midnight after Krishna Abhishekam. It is a very difficult kind of fast, thus many opt for a 'Phalahar' fast, in which you can consume, milk, water, fruits and sattvik items. Hydration is important in this kind of fast, it helps keep you energised and fortify you with vital nutrients.
