Though bananas and coffee don’t sound like a match made in heaven, the logic does actually track. Think of banana milkshakes and now think of creamy, ice cream-heavy cold coffees – and you’ll suddenly see why it makes sense. This recipe takes the best of both worlds and turns it into a delicious beverage that can work as a morning smoothie or an afternoon pick-me-up.
This combination has some secret powers and functions as an effective pre-workout drink. Bananas are high in potassium, an electrolyte that often gets quickly depleted when you undergo physical exertion, and while there’s no scientific proof that it can counteract the effects of caffeine, bananas definitely provide an extra dose of nutrients and vitamins that you wouldn’t get from a regular mug of coffee.
A banana makes the perfect pre-workout snack because it's easy to digest and provides a good amount of potassium, an electrolyte that gets depleted when you sweat during physical exertion.
For this, it’s best to use frozen bananas because they take on a naturally creamy texture when blended and this helps to reduce the amount of cream needed in the drink. Also, if you’re using very ripe bananas we recommend skipping the sugar altogether since the combination of fruits and syrup should be sufficient.
Here we have suggested using amaretto syrup for a subtle almond overtone that works well with both the coffee and the banana. Still, you can try to make your own syrup with equal parts of sugar and water plus a few drops of the flavouring of your choice.
