Sobhita Dhulipala Relishes Curd-Rice Prasad In Chennai Temple

Actress Sobhita Dhulipala, who is known to go back to revering her South Indian roots everytime she gets a chance, was seen spending some time indulging her spiritual side. During her recent visit to Chennai, she was seen dressed down and visiting the famous Kapaleeshwarar Temple in the Mylapore area – where she also took a moment to enjoy the fruits of her prayer. In a series pictures posted by the actress, Sobhita was seen nestling a small leaf bowl filled with the temple’s famous rice prasad – which is distributed to visiting devotees each day.

The curd-rice delicacy, which is one of the many offered foods distributed to devotees also includes other South Indian preparations like puliyogare, lemon rice and pongal. Most recently, the Shiva temple also began to ship its prasad across different parts of the country. Special festivals and auspicious days also witness the kitchens making specialties like akkaravadisal – a slow-cooked rice dish made using milk and jaggery, sundal – a chickpea-based snack seasoned with a tempering of curry leaves and mustard seeds, as well as panchamritham – a delicacy of mashed bananas mixed with honey, dates and milk.

Folklore surrounding the temple also documents that hundreds of devotees are provided free meals each day – with kalee being the most revered of all spiritual remnants. A special type of this steamed flour paste, called the Thiruvathrai kalee is made during the auspicious month of Mazgazhi as a way of paying respects to the Shaivaite saint – Senthanaar. Among the sought-after prasad that is also distributed to devotees is the sundal made using black gram – an offering that is made to the deity before bedtime.
