Slurrp X Studio Ghibli: Indian Dishes Reimagined With ChatGPT

Social media is buzzing with Studio Ghibli images, and everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon. Using the prompt on ChatGPT by OpenAI, influencers are reposting their favourite images in animated form, Bollywood buffs are reimagining iconic moments from blockbuster films, and some technology enthusiasts are just having fun transforming their ideas into adorable anime.

Based in Koganei, Japan, Studio Ghibli is an animation studio with its portfolio expanding to TV commercials, short subjects, and films. It was Hayao Miyazaki who chose the name ‘Ghibli’, which in Italian was the nickname of the Saharan scouting plane. He was passionate about aircraft and wanted to create a wave in the anime industry; hence, Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985.

The films created under the banner are known for their visually captivating portrayal of stories, amid which kitchens and food take centre stage in many scenes. As any connoisseur of Studio Ghibli movies will easily highlight, the dishes represented were not just in the supporting role but were a means to convey emotions, take the storytelling up a notch, and build a connection with everything in the frame.

Portrayal Of Food In Studio Ghibli Films

While many animated films and series showcased food in a 2D format, Studio Ghibli's films focused on details. From vibrant hues in a bowl of noodles to glossy finish to desserts and oil-based delights, it was hard for viewers to differentiate between the real and the reel world as they salivated while looking at their screens.

Take, for example, Howl cooking bacon and eggs or slicing bread in ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ or the onigiri (rice ball) shown in ‘Spirited Away’. This attention to detail is credited to Hayao Miyazaki’s love for food, and it was not restricted to just visuals but extended to the sounds of slashing, sizzling, running tap water, toast popping, etc., that make any kitchen appear lively.

While this new feature of ChatGPT is inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s art, a 2016 post on X (formerly known as Twitter) is also making the rounds in which the director can be seen lashing out at the use of Artificial Intelligence during a demonstration by the studio’s staff. When his remark was translated into English, it read, “I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.” Experts say that this new feature also highlights AI copyright concerns.
