Here's an easy recipe to make at home if you, too, are craving modaks ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi.

Ingredients:

1 cup rice flour

1 cup water

1 cup grated coconut

1 cup jaggery, grated

1/2 tsp cardamom powder

A pinch of salt

Ghee or oil for greasing

Method:

Bring some water to a boil in a saucepan. Put in a little bit of salt and oil or ghee. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and add the rice flour slowly. To prevent lumps, stir constantly. The ingredients should be cooked together over low heat until a smooth dough develops. Cover the dough with a moist cloth and remove it from the heat to prevent it from drying out. To make a thick syrup, melt the jaggery with a little water in a separate pan. Mix in some ground cardamom and shredded coconut to the jaggery syrup. Keep cooking until the liquid thickens and pulls away from the sides of the pan. Take a small portion of the rice dough and flatten it to form a small disc on your greased palms. Put a dollop of the coconut-jaggery filling in the middle of the rice disc. Seal the edges of the rice disc to form a modak shape. Repeat the process for the remaining dough and filling. To ensure that the modaks are fully cooked and have a firm texture, steam them for 10 to 12 minutes. When the modaks are done cooking, remove them from the steamer and set them aside to cool. Enjoy!
