Quinoa v/s Rice: Which One is A Healthier Choice?

In terms of taste and structure, rice and quinoa serve similar purposes. They provide a healthy, chewy starch that can be prepared quickly and is full of nutrition. 

So what is the basic difference between quinoa and rice? 

While quinoa is full of fibrous and protein content, originating from the Andean region of South America, rice is a starchy grain and a good source of carbohydrates. Quinoa is the seed of the goosefoot plant, available in  variations such as black, white, and red. However, we cannot forget the fact that rice is the most consumed staple food throughout the world. 

1. Amino acids

Quinoa has amino acids and proteins that white and brown rice lacks. Therefore, quinoa is always a better choice for those trying to lose weight.

2. Carbohydrates

Quinoa has a lower amount of carbs compared to rice. This makes it a healthier substitute. 

3. Fibre

Both provide us with approx. the same amount of fiber. Yet, rice falls on a slightly higher scale in this regard. 

4. Gluten

Quinoa is gluten and cholesterol-free, naturally kosher, and often organic. However, that's not the case with the most commonly consumed white rice. If you prefer rice, brown rice is a good option since its gluten-free. 

5. Other nutrients

Quinoa has more potassium, which helps people with kidney stones, high blood pressure, and weak bones. It is also rich in iron, manganese, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc, calcium, potassium, and selenium. Packed with several nutrients, rice is not behind as it offers a good amount of phosphorus, manganese, magnesium, and selenium in rice. 

Which one is better? 

Quinoa is comparatively a healthier option than rice. Quinoa can easily replace rice because it has slightly more fiber and protein than white and brown rice. In general, quinoa has three to four times more nutrients than rice and tastes good too.
