Think about a grilled cheese sandwich and you can immediately conjure up an image of crusty, toasted bread which nestles within it plenty of gooey cheese and offers a savoury burst of flavours with every bite. This is the reason why, no matter which part of the world you may be living in, a grilled cheese sandwich marks the epitome of comfort food and luxury. Everybody loves a good grilled cheese sandwich, but two vloggers from the US have taken this love to another level by setting the new world record for making the largest grilled cheese sandwich in the world.
According to the Guinness World Records, two teenaged YouTubers from the US, Exodus and Iggy Chaudhry have set the new record for the largest grilled cheese sandwich in the world as their own unique way to celebrate reaching 100k subscribers. Based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Exodus and Iggy Chaudhry were assisted by their parents, friends and neighbours in their attempt to set the new world record under the keen and discerning eye of Guinness World Record officials.

The team created an enormous grilled cheese sandwich that was 1.89 metres (6.2 feet) wide, 3.32 metres (10 feet, 10.7 inches) long and 7 centimetres (2.75 inches) thick. The bread based used in this sandwich was focaccia because of its ability to hold its shape and structure compared to other bread varieties. The Guinness World Records team says that the focaccia was cut up in giant slices and used to make the grilled cheese sandwich. The bottom bread layer was grilled on an open flame, while the top layer was blowtorched to get that signature brown crust.
The Guinness World Records team also revealed that the greatest challenge for the Chaudhrys was ensuring that the top and bottom layers of the bread were browned properly, and all the cheese they used as stuffing achieved that melted, gooey texture. The final weight of this gigantic grilled cheese sandwich was 189.9 kilos, making it now the largest grilled cheese sandwich made anywhere on this planet. The ready sandwich was then shared with the local community and the leftovers donated to local food banks in Milwaukee.
The Guinness World Records website also mentions that this grilled cheese sandwich was 35 percent larger than the previous record holder, Cabot Creamery of Vermont, USA in the year 2000. Another duo in Germany a few years back also set the world record for the fastest time taken to make a grilled cheese sandwich, where one person was blindfolded and the other wasn’t allowed to use their hands. Clearly, grilled cheese sandwiches and their immense popularity will continue to inspire millions of others to take on such creative and delicious challenges in future too.
Before this, a German duo had made headlines for setting the world record for the fastest time to make a sandwich by two people. One person in the team was blindfolded while the other was not allowed to use their hands. Wondering how quickly they assembled the sandwich? Just 40 seconds! Watch them create it here.
