Mimosa Or Buck’s Fizz? The History And Variation Of The Cocktail

Doesn't like mimosas? It is one cocktail that is a sure shot party starter. From classy branches to crazy party nights, mimosas have been everywhere. This classy drink made with citrus fruit juices and champagne are so of that high end parties, first class flights and even at cozy home functions. But do you know that there is no clear history of the cocktail and when it actually originated?

There is an entire confusion on whether mimosa is a variation of this other cocktail called buck’s fizz or buck’s fizz is just another variation of our good old mimosa. In fact, there are some who argue that buck’s fizz is only but another name for mimosa! With so many different debates, hardly anyone has been able to reach common ground. But nevertheless, we keep enjoying the wonderful taste of mimosas and making them an inseparable part of our parties.

There are versions of history that credit the Paris Ritz's bartender and cocktail writer Frank Meier for making the mimosa cocktail for the first time. However, Meier's 1934 book on mixing drinks has a special symbol for his inventions, the cocktails that he himself mixed and made. And interestingly, the book does not use the symbol for the mimosa, making it rather unclear if he actually invented mimosas or it's just hearsay.

Just like any other classic cocktail, the mimosa has different variations according to the taste of people. the lovers of cocktails have mixed and matched several things to make out equally delicious variations of the cocktail.   • The poinsettia is cranberry juice with champagne or even flavoured vodka.
  • The lemosa, like the name suggests, is lemonade with champagne and a small amount of blueberry syrup. 
  • The vermosa is apple cider with champagne, mainly served in Vermont, United States, hence the name. 
  • The flirtini is made with pineapple juice, champagne and vodka and is a great drink for dates, as the name suggests.  
  • The megmosa is another variation of the cocktail, made of equal parts champagne and grapefruit juice.  
  • The lychee rose mimosa, a beautiful and elegant drink, consists of champagne with lychee and rosewater.
