There is hardly anybody who does not love chocolates. People with a sweet tooth love indulging in rich, creamy chocolate now and then. Often, we are fond of stocking up on chocolates and eating them later. But do you know that chocolates have a shelf life too and can go bad after a certain period?   

Chocolates are derived from cocoa beans, which undergo a complex process of grinding, refining, and conching to achieve their smooth texture and heavenly taste. Its versatility is unparalleled, as it can be moulded into various forms, from silky truffles to solid bars, each offering a unique sensory experience. Nowadays, we often indulge in packed chocolates. Although packed chocolates have an extended shelf life, if not stored properly, they can go bad. Thus, taste and quality get impacted, leading to fast rotting.    

Here are certain tips that help in the storage of chocolates for a longer time, extending their shelf life. Take a look at them:   

  • Store In A Cool, Dry Place 

It is advisable to store chocolate in a cool, dry place with a consistent temperature, ideally between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. You shouldn’t expose the chocolate to extreme cold or heat, as temperature fluctuation can cause chocolate to develop a white, powdery appearance on the surface. This indicates that the chocolate is going bad.   

  • Avoid Exposure To Moisture   

Chocolate is sensitive to moisture, which thus raises the need for proper storage. It should be kept away from exposure to moisture. Thus, it must be kept in an airtight container or should be wrapped in plastic wrap or foil to prevent moisture from seeping in. If exposed to moisture, chocolate develops a sugar bloom, which leads to rotting.   

  • Keep Strong Odours Away   

Chocolate absorbs strong odours quickly. Thus, it is advisable to keep it away from strong-smelling food, spices, or chemicals. Keep it in a place that is dry and cool and away from unwanted odours.   

  • Always Check The Expiration Date   

Most packed chocolates have expiration dates mentioned on the label. This expiration date signifies that the chocolate can be consumed until that date and not after that. You must always check the expiration date before eating the chocolate.  

 

  • Properly Sealed Opened Packages   

It is important to reseal the open packages tightly to prevent the seeping of air and moisture. You can use a resealable plastic bag or airtight container and freeze it in the deep fridge if you plan to store the chocolate for a longer duration.
