Hibiscus sabdariffa, often known as Roselle or Kudrum in our native tongue, is a Malvaceae family shrub. It is generally called to as sour tea in Iran. In English-speaking regions, Roselle is also referred to as Red Sorrel. Originally from Africa and Caribbean countries such as the West Indies and Trinidad and Tobago, it is now widely grown throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world, particularly in India and Southeast Asia. For ages, roselle has been utilised as a medicinal plant. It has historically been used to treat toothaches, urinary tract infections, colds, and even hangovers. In Senegal, roselle juice prepared from the leaves is used to treat conjunctivitis. When the juice is ground up, it can also be used to treat wounds and ulcers.

The shrub roselle is low-maintenance and gets extremely tall. It is easily distinguished by its brilliant crimson stems. It generates a lot of lovely blooms with distinctive appearances. At each node, a calyx is also produced. Calyces are used extensively in the production of food, both fresh and dried.

Uses

This plant is well-known for its many meaty calyces. Fresh red roselle calyces are used to create roselle juice, also known as flor de jamaica, a delicious beverage with a vibrant crimson hue. Some individuals also add roselle leaves to salads. When roselle leaves are used in salads, they give a flavour that is similar to spicy spinach with a sour fruitiness. These leaves always offer a unique flavour to dishes. Dried calyces and dried flowers are also employed as vital ingredients in a variety of recipes.

Benefits

1. Rich in vitamin-C

Roselle flower calyces are high in Vitamin C. You may be aware that Vitamin C is beneficial to your health, but do you know how beneficial it is? Our bodies require it to function properly. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, aids in the production of collagen, wound healing, and, of course, the maintenance of strong bones and teeth.

2. Regulates blood sugar levels

Several studies have shown that the roselle plant can help decrease blood pressure in both systolic and diastolic patients. High blood pressure has been connected to heart disease and has been shown to weaken the heart over time. One meta-analysis of many randomised controlled trials found that roselle did have a significant effect in decreasing systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

3. Packed with antioxidants

The roselle plant is high in antioxidants, which are molecules that help combat free radicals (compounds in our bodies that damage our cells). They are formed when our systems digest food or when we are exposed to potentially hazardous substances such as cigarettes or radiation.

4. Aids Digestion

The seed capsule from the Roselle fruit has diuretic and tonic effects. It promotes urine and bowel motions (owing to its diuretic qualities), cures constipation, and protects against colorectal cancer.
