Most cuisines recommend serving a curry or stew with rice, noodles, bread, or other grains. While the diverse Indian fare has a wide range of these gravies, you will find them in other cuisines as well, like Asian cuisine, Mexican cuisine, and so on. As an ode to this popular style of preparing a dish, the well-known food guide Taste Atlas released a list of the 50 best curries and stews from across the world, and guess what? Indian curry dishes made it to the list!
Yes, you read that right. One of them is the classic Shahi paneer, which has topped the charts by bagging the 5th position on the list. For the unfamiliar, it is a rich, creamy gravy made with loads of butter, fresh cream, and spices, along with cubes of cottage cheese. This has a mildly sweet taste and goes well with naan and rice. The next Indian dish was keema, just five places below the shahi paneer.
The minced meat dish is a rich, hearty stew that is semi-dry and goes well with roti and naan. And the list doesn’t end here. On the 16th spot is the well-known Mughlai curry korma. A thick sauce made with meat stock and filled with yoghurt-braised meat and vegetables, there are a variety of kormas you can find these days.
Among the other dishes on this list were dal tadka, vindaloo, and pav bhaji. While the dal tadka is a simple, lentil-based preparation tempered with spices, the vindaloo is a Goan delicacy. And the bhaji served with pav bread is a popular Mumbai street food. As shared by Taste Atlas on their Twitter handle, the dish that made it to the top of the list and grabbed the first position is a Thai delicacy called Phananeng curry.
Another interesting thing to note here is that chicken tikka masala was also mentioned in the list at number 38 but was classified as a British curry rather than an Indian dish.
