Spring onions may indeed keep for up to five weeks after being purchased with a little extra work. Additionally, you may regrow the leftovers to have an unending supply of fresh spring onions straight from the kitchen. Seems too wonderful to be true?

Spring onions are just young onions that are harvested before they are big and papery like the onions you usually eat. That's exactly what sets them apart. They have the most delectable taste of themselves. Take some home with you if you find them at a grocery store or farmers market. Then, to make sure your haul lasts as long as possible, follow these storage tips.

Spring Onion Storage Tips

The following are the essential storage tips you need to know when working with spring onions:

  • Eliminate any rubber bands that may be holding the spring onions. Arrange the spring onions in a line and cut off the root.
  • Chop the spring onions in half so they would fit into a big ziplock bag. Cut off any spring onion that hangs out and won't fit inside the bag.
  • Use a paper towel to gently wipe the spring onions if they are damp.
  • Tear a length of paper towel big enough to around the cluster of spring onions. In the middle of the paper towel, place the white portion of the spring onion. Squeeze the paper firmly around the spring onions, being careful not to crush them. The spring onions should be placed halfway into the plastic bag. Rep with the green part of the onion.
  • Close the bag and store it in the refrigerator. When storing, don't stack any heavy items on top of the spring onions. Take out the green onions and save them for later use.

The following can be done with any leftover portion:

  • Remove the spring onions once a week, being sure to gently wipe off any excess moisture from their surface. Check the green onions and remove any bits that are softening (if any).
  • Change the paper towel on the green and white sections of the spring onion. After wrapping the spring onions once again, put them inside the plastic bag. Replace the bag in the refrigerator.
