Late night cravings are hard to resist and if you are a foodie just like us, you would know. Imagine craving biryani at 3 am or rolls at 12 am – while you may not have all your favourite places open at the time, there are several spots in Indian cities that can satiate the hungry soul in you with mouth-watering delicacies. For instance, Kazhakkoottam in Thiruvananthapuram has recently emerged as one of the top spots for gourmands around the city. While the IT workforce in Technopark and the nearby campuses are a regular, if you happen to be there on the weekend, you will see people from the city in large numbers thronging the stalls and cafes in the area noshing upon shawarma rolls, shakes, juices, burgers and much more.
The reason why Kazhakkoottam has become a mass favourite of foodies is because it offers an array of options to all types of foodies. From regional biryani to fusion dosas, momos to Amritsari Kulcha and thalis – there is something to impress every hungry soul. One of the most prominent spots is Saranyaa Mess on Attinkuzhy Road, where biriyanis are available from 3am to 11.30pm. Besides biryanis and parotta, the mess serves ‘Salem kari virunthu’, a non-vegetarian platter on weekends, which has over 20 items, including chicken and mutton biriyani, curries, fish delicacies etc.
Eateries and food chains might’ve come to Kazhakkoottam for the night owls of IT but it has garnered the attention of foodies from all nearby towns. However, it isn’t the only one of its kind. Cities like Ahmedabad and Indore boast of food markets that serve foodies till the wee hours of midnight and well past it too, dishing out sumptuous food. While Delhi and Mumbai are known for many restaurants that are open well past midnight, we bring you some more food markets that you can hop on when craving some lip-smacking dishes.
1. Manek Chowk, Ahmedabad
Located in the old town of Ahmedabad and named after Maneknath baba who helped Ahmed Shah to build the Bhadra Fort, Manek Chowk is a vegetable market in the morning, jewellery market in the afternoon, and at night it is the biggest food market in Ahmedabad. No wonder that it is maximum crowded from 8 pm to 1 am, with people noshing upon everything from pav bhaji, gathiya jalebi, fafda to pizza, sandwich and more.
2. Sarafa Market, Indore
Indore’s Sarafa Bazar Market is one that is a usual Indian Gold/Silver jewellery market during the day, transforms into an all-vegetarian food market by 9 p.m., and turns into one of the most famous night food markets in India by late midnight. Initially, there were just some traditional Indian snacks and sweets sold on carts here, however with time delicacies from North and West India and even Chinese cuisine made its way to Sarafa Bazar.

3. Jama Masjid, Delhi
A paradise for non-vegetarians, Jama Masjid is known for haleem, biryani, gosht, butter chicken, nihari and more! From Aslam ka butter chicken to Al Jawahar’s mutton curry or Qureshi’s kebabs – a midnight food trail at Jama Masjid must be on the bucket list of every foodie.
4. Begum Bazar, Hyderabad
The food paradise of Hyderabad, Begum Bazar the biggest commercial market, however foodies know it for the best vegetarian spot in Hyderabad. From crispy kachoris, tantalising dahi vadas, rich dry fruit pakoda to upma dosa and tempting bun malai, a trip to Begum Bazar is sure to leave you mesmerized.
5. Muhammad Ali Road, Mumbai
While a trip to Mohammad Ali Road in Mumbai during Ramzan is a super crowded affair, go on a weekday to sample some lip-smacking nalli nihari, a plethora of sweets and flavored firni besides a platter of melt-in-mouth kebabs, white biryani and so much more.
6. Kazhakkoottam, Thiruvananthapuram
From a simple cup of chai, coffee, juice or shake to Tamil Nadu-style biriyani, porotta and Vizhinjam chicken fry or shawarma, rolls and burgers, Kazhakkoottam suburb in the capital city of Kerala is the latest addition to midnight food hubs of India. The NH66 bypass and service roads are teeming with food spots, big and small. Except for a few places that close at 11pm, the rest are open till 1am or even 3am.
