We have all heard that jackfruit has a similar taste to meat, and that is what makes the fruit so popular among vegans or people trying to quit meat. Jackfruit, also known as kathal, has a texture similar to that of chicken or pork. This gigantic fruit, weighing around 10-20 kilograms has a fairly neutral taste. It is quite fibrous in comparison to other fruits like banana, mango or pineapple. The actual taste of this fruit comes from the sauce or seasoning you pair it with while cooking. This gives enough room for experiment, as the versatile jackfruit can be used quite well to make an array of lip-smacking dishes. Thus, we bring you the recipe of enticing jackfruit fritters which is easy to make and you can also play with the ingredients of your choice to make it more mouthwatering. So, here’s the recipe.
Ingredients:
• 2 cup jackfruit (500gm)
• 2 tbsp rice flour
• 1 cup gram flour (besan)
• 1 medium sized onion, finely chopped
• 1 tsp cumin seeds
• ¼ asafoetida (hing)
• ¼ tsp turmeric powder
• 1 tsp red chilli powder
• ½ tbsp garam masala
• Water
• Pinch of soda
• Salt to taste
• Oil
• Chaat masala and lime juice (optional)
Preparations:
1. Wash the jackfruit then peel and chop them in small size cubes. Take a pressure cooker and add jackfruit, 1 ½ cup of water, pinch of salt and hing as well. Let it boil until the first whistle blows, then turn off the flame. Do not open it before the pressure is released from the cooker.
2. Take a thick bottom pan and heat oil over high flame heat for deep frying.
3. Meanwhile, take a bowl and add onion, rice flour, besan, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garam masala and soda. Mix them well.
4. Add 1 cup of water to the mixture and make a consistency which is thick yet runny. Then add the boiled jackfruit cubes. Mix it well.
5. When the oil is hot enough, lower the flame and start adding battered jackfruit cubes into the oil carefully. Let them cook until they are golden brown. Repeat the process until the jackfruit batter is finished.
6. Sprinkle some chaat masala and lime juice on jackfruit fritters.
Your crispy and spicy jackfruit fritters are ready. Eat them while they are hot.
