On Thursday, Indian Railways made headlines for lowering service charges on meals served on trains. This, however, does not imply that the meals served on the train will cost you less. Railways has reduced the onboard service charges for all non-pre-ordered meals and beverages on premium trains such as the Rajdhani, Duronto, and Shatabdi Express. The Vande Bharat trains will also be subject to this rule. However, the Railways will add INR 50 to all meals, which means that the food will become more expensive.
The Changes
Meals pre-ordered during a train journey will become more expensive due to an additional charge imposed by the Indian Railways. Previously, breakfast, lunch, and an evening snack cost 105, 185, and 90, respectively. With this new additional charge of INR 50 on the food being served, the meals will become more expensive, with the revised cost of these meals being INR 155, 235, and 140. Only tea and coffee will be significantly cheaper as a result of this change.
