At the time of the New Year, most people start thinking about their health. Taking a resolution for good health is one of the perfect things to do. Apart from hitting the gym, considering a healthy diet with good nutritional value is of utmost importance. But in most cases, the New Year’s resolutions don’t last as they are too far-fetched. If you need some tips to make sustainable diet resolutions, here is a Slurrp exclusive with Dr Archana Batra, a Dietician and a Certified Diabetes Educator. Here are some nutritionist-approved pointers by which you can create sustainable health goals for 2025.

Tips To Stick To A Diet

Use SMART Goals

Instead of getting overwhelmed by an unachievable goal or stating it ambiguously, Dr Archana Batra suggests using SMART goals.

  • Specific: Make clarity about what you want to achieve.
  • Measurable: Make a journal to track your progress.
  • Achievable: Set realistic goals that can be achieved.
  • Relevant: Align your goals with priorities and values.
  • Time-bound: Set a timeline to achieve the goal you set.

So, for example, instead of saying you want to get on a keto diet and lose weight, make a goal like eating cleaner with one cheat meal per week and losing 5 kgs in a month. This way, you’ll be able to track your progress and have a better chance of reaching your goal.

Build Healthy Habits

Small habits yield significant results over time. Adopt enjoyable and integrate seamlessly into your daily routine. For instance, you can make vegetables fun, add fruits after meals, meditate, dance, walk, and have five minutes of careful breathing every morning.

Celebrate Progress

Whenever you see progress towards being healthy, celebrate that. Celebrating small milestones will make you motivated and enthusiastic and build confidence. For example, when you are able to complete a week without eating packed food, reward yourself.

How Important Is Nutrition For Holistic Wellness?

Holistic wellness is influenced by what we eat because it encompasses physical, emotional and mental well-being. Dr Archana Batra mentions the following benefits of having a balanced diet and how it can impact your New Year’s resolutions.

  • It prevents diseases: With the intake of maximum nutrients, you’ll be resistant to diseases with a higher immunity and thus have higher energy to work toward your goal.
  • It enhances mood and clarity of mind: If you are eating healthier ingredients, you’ll get a mental health boost, which will push you towards sticking to a workout plan.
  • It boosts the immunity system and energy: A balanced diet will make your energy levels high and strengthen your immune system to make you holistically healthy.

Key Points Of A Nutrition-Focused Holistic Wellness Plan

Plant-Based Foods: Add more fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts into your diet. Not only these but also try to incorporate foods which are rich in nutrients, fibre and antioxidants because they will help in improving digestion, boost immunity and reduce inflammation. You can simply do this by adding a side of salad with your meals, including more veggies, and eating fruits to curb the hunger pangs.

Balanced Nutrition: Include healthy fats in your diet, such as avocados and olive oil. Add whole grains like brown rice and oats instead of refined carbs.

Eat Mindfully: Have little bites while eating the food to protect yourself from overeating. Apart from that, avoid screens until your food is finished.

Stay Hydrated: Sip approximately 7-9 glasses of water in a day. You can also add flavours by using slices of citrus, cucumber or herbs for mint.

Avoid Packed and Sugary Foods: Replace your packet of sugary foods with homemade granola bars and fresh fruits. If you need to purchase a packet of food, read the labels carefully. Choose the one which has fewer calories and more healthy ingredients.

Use Superfoods such as:

  • Turmeric: It has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Berries: It protects against ageing because it is rich in antioxidants.
  • Chia Seeds: Chia seeds are high in fibre, omega-3s and antioxidants.
