Also known as kadaknath or kali masi, this Indian chicken breed is also available in some regions of Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. Known for its distinctive taste and ample health benefits, Kadaknath has a unique black colour. You know what? It’s not just the meat but even the organs as well as bones of this chicken are black too.

Did you know that the eggs of this chicken are black as well. Mostly found in the tribal-dominated Jhabua district, this chicken breed also holds cultural significance in certain Indian communities and has been traditionally consumed as a delicacy. This Indian chicken breed is sold for over Rs 500 per kg not just because of its taste but its low cholesterol as well as high protein content. A few years ago, Madhya Pradesh bagged the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Kadaknath. 

In the rural parts of Madhya Pradesh as well as Chhattisgarh, Kadaknath chicken farming has provided ample livelihood opportunities for the local communities in the regions where it is bred. Small-scale poultry farming of Kadaknath chicken has become an important economic activity for many households. As compared to other chicken breeds, Kadaknath chicken is considered much healthier. As per studies, kali masi has low fat, high protein content and is considered nutritional because of its lean meat.
