There’s no denying the fact that Indians and their love for mangoes is beyond bounds. Come summers and you’ll find every home stacked with variety of mangoes that would be polished off in matter of a few days (or one!). Right from Safeda and Dasheri to Chausa or Langda, mango variants can spoil us to bits. But do you love mangoes enough to spend anywhere between Rs. 8,600/- to Rs. 2.7 lakhs? Sounds bizarre, right?
Turns out, mango can actually cost that much if you are eyeing the Miyazaki mango that is going viral on the internet this season! Grown primarily in Japan’s Miyazaki city, this mango variety is remarkably different looks as compared to the usual variety found in India and southeast Asia. It has a deep red flaming red hue in contrast to bright yellow or green ones that are popular in India. After going through several tests, the highest quality of Miyazaki Mangoes are sold as 'Taiyo-no-Tomago' or 'Eggs of Sunshine'. With 350g weight and about 15% or higher sugar content, Miyazaki mangoes created quite a stir online when it was found that a couple in Jabalpur Madhya Pradesh region grew the rare crop at home. Not just that, they even deployed security guards and guard dogs to protect it from being stolen. According to a report in Hindustan Times, the orchardist couple planted two mango saplings years ago that have now developed into unusual ruby-coloured mangoes.
The cultivation of these mangoes requires warm weather, long hours of sunlight and abundant rain. As per experts, these mangoes are rich in antioxidant and contain beta-carotene and folic acid, which is great for people that need help with tired eyes. According to Japanese media reports, Miyazaki mangoes were sold at Rs. 2.70 lakh per kilogram in the international market last year.
